As dogs collectively named designer breeds gain popularity, opinions either question or praise their very existence.

Can science provide a less contradictory answer about the validity of these dogs?
In the light of actual data, are these breeds really better and healthier than their pedigree counterparts?
And can they even be called a ‘breed’?

It is very timely that we look at these questions from a genetic perspective, moving beyond a world of subjective preferences and possible misconceptions.
